By Peggy Smith Hake:

Keyes School was located about 2 ½ miles northeast of Ulman and was designated as Keyes School District No. 91. I am not sure when the school was built and begun, but it was in existence in the early 20th century and onward until about 1941-42.

The first record I could find of a family named Keyes in that general area was in 1875. Kate Keyes purchased 142 acres of land from William and Sisley Brumley that year. In 1886, Almond and Kate Keyes patented 40 acres of land which joined their property on the west. It is recorded that the old schoolhouse burned and in 1938, the R.A. Wall family once again deeded the 3 acres to the school district to be used for school purposes.

Over the years children from many area families attended the old Keyes school. The surnames included Keyes, Thornsberry, Mayfield, Hix, Kidwell, Bass, Nixdorf, Sipes, Martin, Lamb, Wyrick, Martin, Brumley, Jenkins, Jones, Adams, Myers, Bilyeu, Wickham, Jarrett, Patterson, Coburn, Brockman, and Abbett.

Two of the teachers who taught the old school were Grace Crismon Hix of Ulman and Marjorie Mace Hix of Iberia. I do not know how long the school was in existence but after 1942, the students began attending school at Ulman (District #90).
